What Eye Charts Mean for Your Vision and Eyeglasses

The last time you were at the optometrist's office or visiting your ophthalmologist, were you subjected to a series of eye exams? Well, during an eye test, your doctor probably used a few different eye charts to measure how well you see into the distance – and up close – when compared with other people. The best example: the Snellen eye chart – which was developed by Hermann Snellen in the 1860s. While there are quite a few variations of this eye chart, they typically consist of 11 rows that contain all capital letters. You've probably seen them – the top row usually has a big 'E' and then the following rows get progressively smaller. Think back to your last exam, were you asked to read the bottom row of letters? If you did so successfully, congratulate yourself! Your visual acuity is pretty good!

You may have come across the term 20/20 vision at some point in your life, right? Well, in the US, the standard eye chart is placed on a wall that is 20 feet away from your eyes. A lot of doctors do not have rooms that large, so in a smaller room the snellen eye chart may be placed behind you. Mirrors are then used to make it appear as if it's 20 feet from you. If you've been told you have 20/20 vision, it's considered normal vision and you can read every letter on the chart from a distance of 20 feet. In theory, most people should be able to read at 20 feet. Yet, if you can not read any letter except that big 'E', your vision is considered low at 20/200 – meaning you can read at 20 feet a letter that people with normal visual acuity can read at 200 feet. In the US, you're considered legally blind if you can read at 20/200 vision or worse.

There are other charts used during eye exams, like the Tumbling E eye chart, which is used when the standard Snellen chart can not be used – usually with a child who does not know the alphabet yet or is too shy to read the letters out loud. This chart uses the same scale as the Snellen eye chart but the characters are all a capital E but they are rotated in different directions in increments of 90 degrees.

Another chart used to evaluate your vision is the Jaeger eye chart – which is actually used to for near vision. The Jaeger chart is a series of short blocks of text that come in various type sizes. This chart has a scale that ranges from J1 to J11 or more. J1 is the smallest type and J2 is considered to be the same as 20/20 vision at the reading distance that is indicated on the card. The Jaeger chart is held at a specific reading distance – usually around 12 inches – and you are asked to read the passage on the card at the smallest type you can see. The card is then moved backwards and forwards until you can read a certain type size.

Eye charts are somewhat limited and they are only meant to measure your visual acuity – making them just one part of your complete eye exam for prescription glasses or contact lenses. Eye charts do not check your depth perception, how you view color and contrast, or your peripheral vision. They also will not measure any other items related to your eye health – like eye fluid pressure. They also can not check to see the symptoms of an oncoming visual disease. However, they are an integral part of your eye exam as they check to see if your eyeglasses prescription changed at all. They're a great way to test how well you see and from what distance.

Correcting Astigmatism With Eyeglasses

If you've noticed your vision going a little fuzzy, maybe even a little blurry, but you just do not know why – you may have developed astigmatism and it's time for a new prescription, as soon as possible! While blurry vision is a symptom for nearly every vision care disease and disorder, it usually happens due to astigmatism. Whether you have problems seeing near or far, you can still develop this annoying disorder and nearly two-thirds of people that suffer from nearsightedness also suffer from astigmatism! Obviously, the first thing you should if your vision is blurry is head to your ophthalmologist or optometrist for a proper eye exam!

Some handy facts about your eye: the surface of your eye should be smooth but, in some cases with astigmatism, your eye may be flat in some areas or steep in others. Given the way your eyes are curved, it may be hard for you to focus properly – which will make it hard for you to have crisp sight. Normally, astigmatism does not get worse with time but your astigmatism can change and adapt. Prescription eyeglasses are usually the easiest, and cheapest, way to correct this condition but the correction will usually be up to your eye doctor. This condition occurs in one of two ways – through your cornea if the area is distributed; or if the lens of the eye is curved, which is called lenticular astigmatism.

Once you go for a simple check up, your ophthalmologist or optometrist can properly diagnose the severity of your astigmatism and advise a proper course of vision correction for you. Your eye care specialist will diagnose astigmatism in one of three ways: through a Keratometer which will test the amount of light reflected from your cornea; a Keratoscope which will determine how the light reflects off the cornea so it can measure the severity of the cornea's curve; Egypt through a videokeratoscope, which is a corneal topography instrument that identifies the changes in corneal surface curvature and the severity of the astigmatism.

Since eyeglasses are the easiest way to correct astigmatism, they are the most commonly utilized resource. Here's the problem: they only correct your astigmatism if you wear them all the time! So, if your doctor instructs you to wear your eyeglasses all the time, you should do so. Failing to wear corrective eye eyeglasses with astigmatism could be dangerous – so listen to your doctor's advice!

Thankfully, prescription eyeglasses are no longer the ugly accessory they once were. They are now a fashion-forward part of your wardrobe and can be treated as such. Even if you have no need for distance correction, you may still need to wear your eye eyeglasses all the time. Your corrective lenses will be manufactured according to an updated eyeglasses prescription and will help your eyes to adjust as necessary. The light will be able to bounce off your eyes in the correct way, enabling you to see clearly. Having astigmatism issues is not such a big deal anymore – with thin lenses and the proper frame, your eyes will be feeling as good as new and like a million dollars!

OK, it may not be funny but it's important to recognize before you reach the age where you're considered “over the hill”! Yet, as your body starts wearing down, so do your eyes. In a lot of cases, reading eyeglasses are meant for people who have never worn eyeglasses before. This usually precedes the need for multifocal eyeglasses. There are two types of reading eyeglasses categories: readers and prescription reading eyeglasses. Readers are traditionally found at your local convenient store or grocery store; while prescription reading eyeglasses are found at your doctor's office or online. Additionally, readers tend to sit further down on the nose and are to be worn for shorter periods of time, while prescription reading eyeglasses can be worn all day or as needed and they sit like normal eyeglasses.

If you notice that your eyes are going a bit fuzzy, ask your doctor for help! Once you do your Snellen eye exam, your doctor can properly diagnose your eyes and tell you whether you need basic readers or a new prescription. If you've worn eyeglasses before, the new prescription will not be in place of your old eyeglasses. They will actually act as an addition to your older prescription. Your eye doctor will give you the prescription in one of two ways – either with your distance prescription written into the prescription with an additional value for each eye (ADD); or you'll receive two prescriptions – one for distance and one for reading. If your doctor does not think you need a new prescription or any prescription at all, he or she may recommend getting readers from your local pharmacy with a magnifying degree like +2.00 or +0.50. The degree of magnification will always run in quarter increments and be noted as having a plus symbol (+).

Simple readers, the ones you find at the drug store, are very cheap and basic eyeglasses that come in a multitude of styles, colors, and shapes. They have identical prescriptions in each eye and are only meant for short-term usage. A lot of people buy them in bulk at their local flea market and stash them around the house for when they need them. Their prescriptions will not have a cylinder or axis. The prescriptions will be noted on the packaging somewhere and will read anywhere from +0.25 to +4.00. Since the prescriptions are the same in both eye, you will not have the option to fit the lenses to an actual prescription. They are very much a “one size fits all” kind of lens. Additionally, the pupil distance (PD) will be fit for the national average.

Prescription reading eyeglasses, on the other hand, are made to fit your prescription. So, like choosing your distance-correcting eye eyeglasses, you are given the option to personalize these lenses with your correct pupil distance, cylinder, axis, and sphere. These eyeglasses can be worn all day or just when you need them but may be more expensive than your basic reader. Granted, to cut costs, you should consider buying your reading eyeglasses online, rather than buying them from the eye doctor. Regardless of cost, prescription reading eyeglasses will cut down on any heads or nausea that you may get from wearing basic readers. The choice is yours when it comes to which type of eyeglass lens to choose – it just comes down to function-ability!

All About Eye Floaters

Have you ever looked out into the distance and seen specs of something floating in the line of your vision? They kind of look like dust particles when they float around the eye but, these “floaters”, as they are known, will stand out if you start staring at a light or brightly colored object – like a white wall. You may also notice it when you come into or out of the sun. So, where do these floaters come from and what do they do to your eye? We will explore their role in your eye and how they come about!

Ever heard of a vitreous humor? Unless you hold a PhD or MD, chances are it's all Greek to you, right? Well, they lie inside each eye and they are a jelly-like substance that works to keep the shape of the eyeball. This clear substance acts as a shock absorber when your eye is pushed out of shape. It's also made up of more than 98 percent water. On occasion, it happens that substances, like dust, float in the vitreous humor.

Typically, floaters will go unnoticed. Yet, sometimes they bother people, which forces people to rub their eyes – a big optical no-no. People often mistake these floaters for dust or tiny insects – then they start to rub their eyes, only to realize that the floaters are still there. Why does this happen? It's simple: The floaters are within the eye and not really on the surface. If you get annoyed by the floaters, do this exercise: look up and down, then from side-to-side. It will swim the vitreous humor and move the floater out of the way. If you try to look directly at them, they also may seem to disappear.

The floaters you see come in different shapes and sizes. These include dots, threads, clumps, squiggles, flecks, bubbles, webs and so on; and they are also known to increase with age. Basically, as you age the vitreous humor begins to dissolve and liquefy, which creates a watery center. Some of the un-dissolved gel will float around in the liquefied center of the vitreous. Oddly enough, what you are seeing is not actually the object floating in your eye – it's actually the shadow and the floaters never stay dormant or still.

Typically, the floaters are harmless because they are really just tiny clumps that have formed in the eyeball and are suspended within the vitreous humor – so they move where your eye goes. Yet, there are times when too many eye floaters could mean your eye is damaged or you're developing an eye disease. Seeing flashing lights in conjunction with the floaters could indicate a migraine – it could also mean you got up too quickly or that your blood pressure is high. Flashing lights is never a good thing, so go see your doctor.

Now, ask yourself this: when was the last time you had your vision checked? People who wear prescription glasses tend to get their eyes checked every one to two years but those who do not wear any type of eyeglasses frames often wait up to four years for an eye exam. To be on the safe side, make sure your eyes are checked at least once every two years and get an updated eyeglasses prescription if you need to. Making sure your eyes are in tip-top shape will help ensure that the floaters you see are actually harmless.
