Let's look, with both eyes open, at some facts surrounding nutrition and vision.

Results from AREDS, begun in 1992, were published in 2001. Results from AREDS2 begin in 2006, were published this year. Each study examined the two most common forms of eye disease, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.

What are those, exactly? Let's start with macular degeneration.

The macula is part of the eye's retina, which serves a similar function to the film in a camera. We should probably explain that before there were digital cameras there was this thing called film. Google it.

Just like a camera lens, the eye's lens receives an image. The image is transmitted to the retina, like the way an image taken by a camera lens used to be transmitted to the film in the camera.

The macula is in the center of the retina. When light comes to a point of focus on the center of the macula, you can see objects and colors sharply.

The macula is yellow, which enables it to absorb harmful blue and ultraviolet light that enters the eye, blocking this harmful light like a pair of sunglasses .

AMD comes two ways: dry and wet. Dry is when the tissue of the macula deteriorates. Wet is worse. That's when the blood vessels behind the retina leak blood and other fluid into the macula.

AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the US of people over 60, according to research conducted under the auspices of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Some estimates put the number of affected people as high as 15 million. However, many of those people are only mildly affected or will not experience a decline in vision at all. But about 2 million Americans with AMD are severely affected, to the point of acute vision loss.

Now let's examine cataracts.

Cataracts form when the eye's lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision and vision loss. Cataracts happened because the lens of the eye is made up mostly of water and protein. As we age, the protein begins to clump together, creating the cloudy effect on the lens.

Most cataracts are related to aging and are very common in older people. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract-removal surgery, according to statistics compiled by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). In addition, almost 22 million Americans have cataracts in at least one eye, and the number is expected to increase to 30 million by 2020.

OK, so now that we know what AMD and cataracts are, let's look at which nutrients AREDS and AREDS2 found helpful in addressing these eye diseases.

The first study, AREDS, examined whether taking vitamins E and C, zinc, and beta-carotene, which makes carrots orange, reduced the onset of these diseases.

For AREDS2, the NEI scientists added omega-3 fatty acids and the antioxidants lutein (pronounced LOO-teen) and zeaxanthin (zee-ah-ZAN-thin), both of which are abundant in spinach, kale, and other leafy green vegetables. Both of these antioxidants are also present in the macula.

In addition to being antioxidants, which are molecules that help maintain the health of cells, lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids. Carotenoids are what give plant foods their colors.

Lutein is especially important because it gives the macula its yellow pigment. When this pigment degenerates, causes of this degeneration include aging, a poor diet, smoking, being a female, and having blue eyes, the macula degenerates, too, because the protection the pigment supplies gets lost. It's like a dark, polarized sunglass lens getting replaced by a clear lens on a bright, sunny day.

Now let's go back to the studies and their findings.

Contrary to the preliminary results of AREDS, the AREDS2 results show that taking vitamins E and C, beta-carotene, zinc, and the omega-3s had no effect on reducing the impairment or reducing the effects of either disease.

However, there were significant reductions in AMD from lutein and zeaxanthin.

Moreover, when beta-carotene was removed from the study, the scientists found that the AMD-reducing effects provided by lutein and zeaxanthin doubled.

AREDS2 also found that none lutein nor zeaxanthin prevented cataracts from forming. But that's not to say that there are not foods that help prevent cataracts. A 1993-2009 study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford in England found that vegetarians and vegans were less likely than meat eaters to develop cataracts, vegetarians 30 percent less likely, vegans 40 percent, and that the more meat people ate, the greater the likelihood they would develop cataracts.

Type 2 diabetes used to be known as adult-onset diabetes, but the number of children and adolescents who have this type of diabetes has greatly increased during the past 20 years. Consequently, the name of the disease has changed to reflect this appalling reality.

Cubicles come in various sizes, but essentially the standard is six feet by six feet with the surrounding paneling around five feet high. Standard bifocals, trifocals, or progressive (no-line) bifocals are designed for general purposes. Yes, you can see the middle mid-range distance with a standard trifocal or progressive lens, however, you have to elevate your head up into an awkward position to look at the computer screen or view anything you pinned on the wall panel. The actual physical area for mid-range vision in any general purpose eyeglass, often called the “sweet spot”, is too small to offer a large enough field of vision to work comfortably all day on the computer. One pair of eyeglasses can not do everything you need effectively, so think about a task specific eyeglass designed for use at the computer while working in a cubicle setting. Here are just a couple of examples of cubicle dwellers that I have helped.

I was asked by Human Resources from an aerospace company to see if I could help out an employee, age was late forties, who complained about lower back pain and eye fatigue, especially in the afternoon. When I observed the employee in the cubicle, I noticed this company did a good job with both the environmental and physical ergonomics. However, the employee was wearing single vision reading glasses, and was forced to continuously move forward to see the computer screen and back again to see the reference material on the desk. Also, any reference material that was pinned to the cubicle wall panels required moving both the chair and moving forward again in the chair to bring the materials in focus. Most people who have great distance vision only want what they think they need, reading lenses, so they will not have to wear glasses full time.

Single vision reading glasses are not a computer mid-range focus. Reading glasses are usually set for distances between 14 – 16 inches, and the computer screens are set out to about 19 – 28 inches. This caused the constant motion of moving forward in the chair. The chair was an expensive ergonomically design piece of office furniture, and was being used every time the employee moved forward to see the screen, as a very expensive STOOL! I suggested a pair of bifocals, where the top portion of the lens will allow a person to focus comfortably on the computer screen without the constant moving forward in the chair. The top part of the “computer glasses” wave the worker enough range (distance) to see the walls of the cubicle clearly too, and made the pinned material easier to read without the extra physical movement needed with the reading glasses. The simple use of a task specific pair of eyewear, along with suggestions on how to make the computer hours less tiresome, mitigated the previous visual and physical problems of this employee. Now, for the other aerospace employee whose progressive lens design and cubicle experience was not working.

Progressive lenses, like conventional trifocals, have an intermediate mid-range power zone that will work for computer distances. The drawback, as I mentioned earlier, is you have to lift your chin up to find the lens area with the correct power and you have only a small viewing area through the lens to work with. In this case I used a Near Variable Focus design lens, which is basically similar to progressive lenses except the power zone in the top of the lens is designed for mid-range and the lower lens area area is used for reading. Examples of this kind of lens design would be a Sola Access and Shamir Office Lens, and both designs have worked well for me in the past for this “Office Lens” Near Variable Focus type of progressive lens design.

Check with your eye doctor yearly to make sure your prescription lenses are current. Measure the distance from your nose to the computer screen and let the doctor know, so he can form a task specific computer pair of eyewear. A low cost alternative to dedicated computer glasses would be a Computer Conversion Clip. These clip-on's attach over your existing general wear glasses to convert the distance portion of the lens into a mid-range computer focus with a crystal clear wide zone of vision. If you have to be in front of a computer everyday for 2 or more hours than make the cubicle a better place to work with less visual and physical stress.

Simple Exercises You Can Do to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

Eyesight is the most important sense to a majority of people. We rely on our vision to help us do everything everything, from getting dressed to cooking meals to caring for children and pets to driving to performing our job at work. Without the ability to see, our lives would be dramatically different.

That's why it's important to maintain good vision. We exercise our bodies to keep them in optimal condition. Fortunately, you can do the same with your eyes. Here are some quick and easy exercises you can do to keep your eyesight free from deterioration.

Start with Warm-ups

You should never engage in intense exercise without warming up your body, right? The same goes for your eyes. Start by cupping your palms and covering your eyes. Imagine total darkness. When you see only blackness, uncover your eyes and repeat several times.

Eye Movements

Your parents may not have liked it when they said something you did not like and you roled your eyes at them. However, eye rolling is actually a good exercise for your eyes. This exercise is easy to do. Just roll the eyes clockwise for a minute, then switch direction and go counterclockwise for another minute. This helps your eyes maintain strength and agility.

Other eye movements you can do include up and down movements. Move your eyes up and down eight times, then move them from side to side, repeating eight more times. Be careful not to force your eyes too far in any one direction, as you could make your eyesight worse.

Focus Exercises

Pick two objects – one that is less than 30 feet away and one that is more than 150 feet away. Focus on the distant object for about 15 seconds. Next, focus on the closer object for the same amount of time. Go back to the distant object and repeat five times.

Another focus exercise to do is to hold a pencil or other object in front of you, at an arm's length away. Slowly bring the object to your nose and follow it with your eyes until you can no longer focus. Repeat 10 times.

Finish with a Massage

Who does not love a good massage? Relax your eyelids by closing your eyes and massaging them in a circular motion for 1-2 minutes. Next, lightly press three fingers of each hand onto your eyelids. Hold them there for several seconds, release and repeat. Finish with a warm compress by soaking a towel in warm water and applying it on closed eyelids.
